Hi,
I found a pair of these in working condition semi locally. They have nice iron, and have been recapped. I have only seen pic's and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with these amps.

Thanks,

Bill

I've got a pair of those Bill, that I bought simply because the iron looked so good. I haven't had time to do anything with them at all, but was thinking of stealing the iron and building either a stereo amp or pair of monos with it. The chassis are awfully tight for a fat fingered old blind guy to work in.Opinions on Ampex A692 6V6 mono's (3) I also remember being intrigued by the front end tube, but can't think of the number right of (something like 5963 ??). It may even be a pentode, but I'll have to go check? I certainly can't imagine any reason they wouldn't be every bit as good as the Roberts R2R amps that people fuss about.

They have nice iron,

All of the Ampex amps I've seen used Triad iron. Triad made high-end & low-end stuff but Ampex used both S & HS/HSM products from them. S seems to be on par with what Heathlit, Dynaco, EICO, et al used for open frame transformers and HS/HSM is equivalent to UTC LS. Either way, Ampex had good stuff installed.

I've got a set of the Ampex 2010 suitcases that need a recap too . . . I *think* their pretty much the same (Williamson / 6V6 PP / etc . . .) Mine have an EF86 in the front end - not sure if the A692 is the same :scratch2:

cableguy - did you snag the speakers too ? Those Ampex / JBL 8 inchers are REALLY nice . . . I have mine loaded in Heathkit / Jensen SS-1 cabinets with Jensen RP103's for tweets

Hi Markus,
no speakers, but I just did finally pull the trigger on the amps though. I couldn't say no...Opinions on Ampex A692 6V6 mono's (7)
I won't have them for a few days but here are a few pics for eye candy. More to come when I have them in my possession...

since we're sharing . . .

here's my original thread, and shots of my 2010 suitcases. both need a recap, but their in fine shape otherwise. I'm SLOWLY getting through my 6973 monoblocls (recap / retube / one needs a new socket), so these are backburner for now . . .

Wish I could find one of those AC cords that go to those as my Roberts cord has been lost for 25 years. I always check out old cords at thrifts but no luck in all these years, any ideas where to locate one?

That is pretty cool. I had wanted to see what the suitcases looked like - my Dad had said that he had always wanted a pair, but he ended up buying an Ampex Signature console instead - which I now own  The electronics are all gone, but the speakers are in perfect shape and I use them all the time. Looks like a 10 inch extended range woofer and a tweeter that looks like the old JBL bullet tweeters. Great sense of presence. I am using them with a Fisher 400-X at the moment, but I am contemplating a Leben CS300. Again, thanks for all the pics.

Mike

those are GE tweeters - which sound awsome. i had a few pairs that i wanted to make their own casing and use 'em as super tweets, but didn't find time and gave 'em away to my brother.
